2022-2023 New Head Of school

Picture
Kiva has a new HOS for 2022-2023

The CKMS Board is delighted to announce the hiring of Lurleen McCormick as our new Head of School! Ms McCormick comes to us from Dolores Elementary School where she has served as Principal for the past two years. Prior to that she was an Assistant Principal at Sobesky Academy in Wheat Ridge. On her way to becoming an administrator, Ms. McCormick worked for many years on the Front Range as a Special Education teacher, science teacher for both children and adults, math teacher, and for several years as a paraprofessional assisting a student with autism in the general classroom. Ms. McCormick received her BS in Agriculture from Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, her MS Degree Special Education Generalist from Regis University, Denver, and her Education Specialist (Ed. S.) Degree in Administrative Leadership and Policy Studies with Principal Licensure (K-12) Certification from University of Denver.

In her own words, Ms. McCormick has a “successful history of shaping a schoolwide vision of academic success for all students by creating a welcoming climate to embrace and enjoy education: cultivating leadership among stakeholders and improving positive student behaviors.” She believes in a collaborative leadership style, setting high standards for behavior and work completion and investing resources in training highly effective teachers. Ms. McCormick’s passion for education stretches beyond her own learning and that of her students and staff to the whole school community via in-person and online formats.

Her past experiences and personal passions in education align with Kiva’s own Mission and Vision. We look forward to her leadership and collaboration as we continue to grow and blossom as a school.
Please join us in welcoming Ms. McCormick to our school community!

Vision
Children’s Kiva Montessori School is a place of vibrant and joyful learning where students are immersed in academic, emotional, and social growth on their way to becoming kind, confident, and engaged members of their communities.

Mission
Children’s Kiva Montessori School builds a strong foundation for children.

We challenge students through integrated curriculum; we work in supportive and engaging environments;
we collaborate with one another; we embrace diversity; and we explore our passions.

.
Kiva Montessori Charter School was founded in 2014 and currently serves 135 children in grades K-8. Our school provides a foundation in Montessori education augmented with community-based projects, expeditionary learning, and STEAM curriculum enrichment. We strive to meet the needs of the whole child (social, emotional, physical, and intellectual) in strong partnership with families and the community. Our multi-age classrooms allow students opportunities to work within a variety of academic levels and subject areas, independently or in small groups, where independence and self-discipline are fostered. Our school offers a non-traditional educational option to families that promotes personal responsibility, self-motivation, high standards, and a global perspective.

In its ninth year of operation, Kiva Montessori is known for its flexibility in meeting the needs of the whole child with academic rigor that is unmatched in the region.  Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, Kiva students outpaced others in the region, in some cases growing academically at nearly twice the pace of other students.  In addition, Phase II (of four) is near completion as our beautiful new campus is being developed to accommodate the growing number of students whose families are choosing success and stability.

Children's Kiva Montessori Charter School is located in Cortez, Colorado in the beautiful Four Corners Region where rivers, mountains, mesas, and canyons offer unparalleled access to the outdoors for recreation, sport, enjoyment, and solace from 14,000 peaks in the San Juan Mountains to canyons on the Colorado Plateau.  The region is rich in archeological resources, cultural and biological diversity, and farming and ranching heritage.  Our community, perhaps the last, best place in the intermountain West, honors culture and context.
